Color laser printers have left their mark giving users crisp printouts at lower per-page prices. One of the newer examples is Canon Color imageCLASS 612Cdw.
This printer is designed for the home or office user that wants crisp laser printing at a lower cost per page than what inkjets offer. Although this laser printer is listed at $279.99, some retailers are selling it for around $185.
It is built like a tank weighing in at 34.1 pounds.
- Wireless Printing lets you print directly from your iPhone, Mac or PC, iPad or other mobile device without a router
- 5-line LCD display (monochrome)
- Automatic Duplex Printing lets you save paper by printing on both sides
- Multiple Connectivity lets you connect by Ethernet LAN, or wireless.
- Recommended Monthly Volume: 30,000 pages.
The quality of the printouts was excellent for a laser printer. If you have to have deep and rich color printouts, use a quality inkjet printer. These printers are made for color gradations that lasers cannot match. But they have come close in recent years as the Canon LBP612Cdw can attest.
This printer has a rated speed of 19ppm for black or 11ppm for color or 11-ppm for any two-sided printing
Printing a single-page Word document took 12 seconds after warm up. Ten copies of a single page took 40 second to print.
The setup guide that comes with this printer makes installation with your Mac a breeze. The documentation comes with a CD (Windows only), but being a Mac owner, I just overlooked it due to Apple’s ease of setting up printers.
To connect to your Mac, you have two options:
- Download Canon’s drivers and follow the instructions.
- Go to System Preferences and then Printers & Scanners Click the + button to add your Canon printer. When you see this printer appear in your left side window, you are ready to print!
Like most other printers on the market today, this Canon printer features wireless printing. It can use 802.11b/g/n, but not ac platforms
You can also connect the printer directly to your Mac using an optional USB cable.
An easier alternative would be to try to connect using your Wi-Fi router. Ask the Canon to find your network, then manually type in your password. When you receive a “Connected message on the display, you are ready to wirelessly print.
One of the negative considerations in buying a color laser printer is the cost of toner cartridges. The LBP612Cdw comes with a set of 4 cartridges (black, cyan, magenta and yellow) known as starter cartridges. The black is rated at 1400 pages while the color cartridges are rated at 690.
Canon offers standard and high yield cartridges. The standard cartridges provide enough toner for 1400 black pages and 1300 color pages priced at $282 for a set of 4.
The high yield cartridges provide toner for 2800 black pages and 2200 color pages priced at $375 for a 4-set.
Please note that discounts can be found online or using coupons in stores. Another option for even lower printing costs would be generic cartridges. But be aware of possibly doing damage to your printer with these cartridges.
For an office that does a lot of multiple-page printing, this feature saves you money by using less paper to print documents.
The LBP612Cdw lets you print PDF documents or photos (tiff, or jpeg only) from your USB flash drive. This printer has a separate USB 2.0 port that allows the user to plug in their flash drive to immediately connect with this printer.

With any technology device, there are always some negative factors than come into play and printers are no exception.
As much as there is to admire with this printer, there are some complaints, even if minor.
My previous printer had a 250-page paper tray that did not need frequent refilling.
The LPB612Cdw only has a 150-page tray which requires frequent refills. The good news is that it also has a single multi-purpose feeder for odd sizes like envelopes.
With all the features included with this printer, you would expect an LCD color touchscreen. This printer only has a 5-line monochrome display that is adequate.
The cost of cartridges is another complaint, not just for this printer, but for most lasers. Yes, the cost per page is lower for laser printers, but the cost for toner cartridges is a major factor. The least price for standard toner cartridges for this printers is $282 for a set of four.
One could buy a whole new printer with cartridges included for less than the replacement of these cartridges!
If you are looking for a printer with sharp color printouts, this Canon LBP612Cdw is one to consider. If color is not a factor, a monochrome laser printer is a better investment.
However, if you want to print with striking printouts at a lower cost per page than inkjets, this Canon may be for you.
